I suffer from migraines of varying severity. I have had them since I was in my early teens and they usually follow a particular pattern of feeling a bit rubbish, then the painful part and then horrendous vomiting and retching. After this I tend to sleep and it goes away leaving me feeling washed out and fragile for a day.
I had a massive breakthrough with managing my migraines after consulting a doctor who had a special interest in painful conditions such as migraines. He helped me discover my triggers so i could avoid getting them in the first place. My particular triggers are the common ones: Hunger (often confused with food - its not the big lump of cheese or chocolate you’ve eaten, its the fact that you were so hungry you wanted to eat it). Sleep disruption - this is a difficult one when dealing with jet-lag but naps and adequate ‘resting’ can help. Dehydration - a very important one. Even mild dehydration can lead to migraines and trekking in hot humid countries uses up a lot of water. Stress - some stress is good for you. Working under pressure is healthy if manageable. When things get too overwhelming and frustration kicks in then this pushes people to start breaking down, either mentally or physically. TV isn’t worth busting a blood vessel over and occasionally I allow myself to forget this. Whether it’s nervous breakdowns, cold-sores or migraines - it aint worth it. Those of you who read Leonard Brothers Veterinary Practice Blog may have spotted my latest entry. In it I make another New Years resolution to cycle to work more and detail how my first attempt was rather less than successful. I intended to document the glorious attempt to cross the winter landscape of the Cheshire / Shropshire border with my little happy-snap camera. Due to the rather unfortunate hawthorn and inner tube interface the film was rather cut short. However it was a beautiful day and an excuse to play with video editing software so here is the little sequence what I shot.....

I am going to shoot a few short video clips as well so will get some of them online (I am sorry if they take a long time to load - I’ll try and keep them short and sweet).
Mongolia is an amazing place to visit. Most people do the tourist thing in the summer but not us. We chose almost the coldest time of the year to visit. Coming from the UK where we are all complaining about temperatures of -100C, its amazing to step out of the airport in Ulaanbaatar at -240C even though we are on the same latitude as France! Four of the ten days were spent living in a Ger (what the Turks call a Yurt) which is a large round tent with a stove in the middle. The thermostat is a little difficult to set so you’d be stripped to your pants when the fire is blazing in the evening and then snuggled deep in your sleeping bag as the fire died overnight. The next trip is scheduled to be in Vietnam at the end of January so I’ll have a few more pics and clips from there soon. Here’s to a great 2010 and I wish you all health and happiness.
