People often remark on the fact that it takes 5 years to train to be a vet, suggesting that it’s a long time. Its not long enough by about 15-30 years as far as I am concerned. There is just so much to learn and its constantly changing. There isn’t a day at work when I don’t get a text book out at least once. I love finding out new stuff or just refreshing myself on unfamiliar techniques.
I spent last weekend on a course at the RVC (Royal Vet College - basically London Vet School) improving my skills at interpreting xrays of the chest and abdomen. Chris Lamb, the lecturer, was excellent, providing us with loads of cases to look over and helping us spot the more subtle changes that can appear on those black and white films. I’ve booked myself on a whole module of courses like this next year so my brain will be leaking out my ears by next Christmas!

Me, the mother, Dunc and a few other friends popped round to Mike’s house to see his Harris Hawk this week. He hasn’t had it that long but it’s settling in very nicely, flying to the fist really well.
They really are a very specialist pet requiring a lot of care and attention but Mike is obsessed with birds of prey! |
