A departure from my normal work (whatever that is) saw me co-hosting Wildscreen’s Panda Awards which are the BAFTA/Oscar equivalents for Natural History Filmmakers. My chaperone and co-host for the evening was the lovely Joanna Lumley (pictured above with me and the also-lovely Harriet Nimmo - Chief Executive of Wildscreen).
Hosting awards is a huge responsibility and an extremely nerve-wracking experience. I only ended up doing it because I misread an email, confusing “present an award” with “present the awards”. I had never used auto cue before so it really was a baptism of fire. The other hurdle for me was my questionable wardrobe. Thanks to some quick thinking from my agent and the organisers and the generosity of a local tailors I was kitted out in a very nice suit for the evening (at £700 I made sure it was returned in the same state it left the shop - big napkins a must). Wildscreen is a charity that helps promote conservation through wildlife imagery. The festival is much more than just the awards with workshops and other initiatives.
